Modernizing a dated service

Over the course of several years, the design had remained stagnant with no significant updates. As a result, the entire service had begun to feel very outdated and lacked a modern edge.

We wanted to not just give the visuals an update, but the whole experience. Therefore we first of all put out a Hotjar survey on the service gather opinions what the users thought was most important while while looking for Football news.

When we had gathered a base of information to point us in a direction, we started to conduct interviews to get into the nitty gritty details both of what content was desired but also about the design and information structure.

My role

The team consisted of me as a designer, two developers and later a product owner. I conducted user interviews, set up surveys using Hotjar as well as doing the design.

Brand update

The previous brand color (left) resembled the one of a large betting company, which made the whole service look sponsored content.

Dark mode

One of the features that our users asked for the most was dark mode. Being such a small team it allowed us to prioritize the tasks ourselves. We decided that it was a smart move to build all components and design in a light and dark version already from the get go.

It was an interesting challenge since creating a service with two color modes was something neither I or the developers had done before.

Follow your team

Following your team is what being a football fan is all about. It was very important to allow the users to customize their feed so that it is filled with news about their team that they really care about.

As well as following a team you could also follow players, leagues or even some of Fotbollskanalens bloggers and journalists.

A service as a vessel

Podplay is a podcasting platform that offers exclusive and non-exclusive podcasts through their apps.

In a fast paced industry, I have supported Podplay with a visual revamp to make their service modern and act as a vessel towards a better way of promoting content on the platform.

Working in a small and agile team we were able to try out designs in production, and then quickly react once we gathered feedback on the reception from our users. This way of working with tons of small releases allowed us to not be afraid of trying out new ideas.

My role

At Podplay I was the only designer, working with UX, UI and research. I worked closely together with the product owner, lead developer as a trio to conceptualize what Podplay should be as

a service.
